Arctic and North Atlantic Regions 2007
Remote Coast of
East Greenland
Longyearbyen, Svalbard – East Greenland –
Reykjavik, Iceland
Few are privileged to reach the Polar Regions of this great planet.
The Arctic region of East Greenland is today a protected national park and
is home to musk Ox, Arctic fox, Arctic hare, wolves, caribou, Lemmings and
more. It is also possible to see the elusive Polar Bear and perhaps even a
rare sighting of the Narwhal. We learn about the early explorers and visit
the remains of their settlements and also visit an (Greenlandic) Inuit
settlement of today. All of this is set in a landscape of dramatic fjords,
calving icebergs, and endless tundra – a truly pristine environment.

nights)
From Steam to
Ice – Fjords of East Greenland
NEW
Reykjavik, Iceland – East Greenland -
Reykjavik, Iceland
East Greenland has been so popular that in 2007 we are adding a second
voyage on this coast. This compact program takes us to the coast of East
Greenland in an area of some of the most spectacular fjords with views of
dramatic snow capped mountains, glaciers and late summer icebergs. We
spend our time walking in the beautiful wilderness, watching for wildlife
and also visit an Inuit community to gain insight into the challenges of
life today in the remote north.
Sept. 4 – Sept. 11, 2007 – PS67-17 (8 days/7
nights)
The Viking Trail to the Americas
Reykjavik,
Iceland – Greenland – Iqaluit, Baffin Island, Canada
We set sail on the first leg of a two-part voyage that follows in
the footsteps of the early explorers to visit the southern part of
Greenland and learn about the lives of the early explorers and the Inuit
of yesterday and today – from Nanortalik to Brattahlid, Hvalsey and
Qaqortoq. We then sail across “iceberg alley” for Baffin Island of the
Canadian Arctic and keep a keen watch for seabirds, seals, whales and
perhaps Polar Bear. We explore the coast of Frobisher Bay before reaching
Iqaluit, the capital of the newly created Nunavut territory of Canada.
Many choose to stay onboard to combine this program with “In the Wake of
the Vikings”
Sept. 11 – Sept. 20, 2007 – PS67-18 (10 days/9
nights)
In the Wake of the Vikings
Iqaluit,
Baffin Island – Labrador – St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
From Iqaluit, capital of Nunavut, set off on the second part of
this journey as we continue our exploration of Baffin Island also Akpatok
Island of the Canadian Arctic keeping a constant vigil for the elusive
Polar Bear. As we journey southbound, we explore the amazing coast of
isolated Labrador with boreal forests, fjords and tundra and learn about
the lives of the early inhabitants and settlers. We then come to the
island province of Newfoundland with their fishing “outport” communities
and rugged natural coastline. This journey is a fascinating tale of
tenacious people in a challenging environment.
Sept. 20 – Sept. 28, 2007 – PS67-19 (9 days/8
nights)
