Reykjavik,
Iceland – East Greenland – Reykjavik, Iceland
PS67-17:
September 4 – 11, 2007
(8 days / 7 nights)
From
$1865 per person
DAY
1: REYKJAVIK – (Iceland): We embark on the M/V Polar Star to
begin this spectacular voyage to the remote coast of East Greenland
DAY
2: AT SEA – We relax onboard attending lectures and watching
for seabirds and marine life. As we head north we cross the Arctic Circle.
Wildlife sometimes spotted here include Blue, Humpback and Minke whale,
Orca, White-beaked dolphin and birds including Fulmars, Kittiwakes,
Gannets, Guillemots, Razorbills and many other species.
DAY
3: NANSEN FJORD – The amount of ice here will dictate how far
we progress but this iceberg dominated fjord is a beautiful area to
explore whether by ship, Zodiac or on land. It offers views of the
Christian IV’s Glacier and the highest Arctic mountain, Gunnbjørn Fjeld
and a Zodiac landing is planned at Sødalen known for two species of
northern geese. We also hope to make a side trip into Mikis Fjord where
wildlife is often spotted.
DAY
4: KANGERLUSSUAG FJORD – We reach this fjord where fantastic
glaciers reach right down to the sea creating a dramatic landscape of
cliffs, icebergs and glacier fronts. The elusive Polar Bear and shy Ivory
gull have been seen in this area. On shore are the settlement remains of
the early civilization of Thule people.
DAY
5: TASIILAQ & KANGERTIGTVATSIAQ FJORDS – Today we continue our
exploration of this coastline of labyrinth fjords with Zodiac cruising in
Tassilaq and Kangertigtvatsiaq Fjords. We plan a shore landing possibly at
Sangmilik.
DAY
6: TASIILAQ – Today we will visit this Greenlandic community
(also known as Ammassalik) and take this opportunity to hear the sound of
the Ammasslik drum and see samples of the winter house, their traditional
masks and Tupilaks (traditional carvings). This brightly painted thriving
town of 1,800 is shared by its people with a large population of
Greenlandic dogs and is the largest community of the east coast. This town
has an excellent museum and post office for mailing postcards home with
the beautiful Greenlandic stamps.
DAY
7: AT SEA – As we head back to Iceland we continue our watchful
vigil for wildlife, attend lectures and recap the vents of our journey.
DAY
8: REYKJAVIK – (Iceland) We disembark after breakfast for
flights home.
