following the tour. These excursions can only be ordered and paid for
during your stay and operate based on weather and capacity restrictions.
Your “Destination Guides” are on hand to assist you at your hotel with
information on the excursions.
Please note there is a
two-hour time difference between Iceland and Greenland. The flight time
between Reykjavik and Kulusuk is about 2 hours.
Because of the geographical
location of East Greenland, the village of Kulusuk and the town of
Ammassalik are and have always been relatively isolated in relation to the
rest of Greenland. - East Greenland is the destination if you want to
experience traditional Greenlandic culture and the original drum dance.
Explore "Tunu" - The backside of the
country - which the Greenlanders name the East Coast of Greenland.
Amongst other things, the deserted location has left its mark in the
special East Greenland dialect and the original culture has not been
affected by the western influence to the same degree as in other parts of
Greenland. Actually it is only a little more than 100 years since the
first Europeans "discovered" this area! Old Traditions are still very
much a live in East Greenland; During the winter hunting trips with dog
sledges (several weeks in duration) are still common and many families
choose to live at isolated spots, to improve their hunting of seals, polar
bears etc.
Once the summer comes and the ice breaks
up, the families are fetched by ship and return to town to sell the
winters booty and buy new supplies of cartridges, coffee and other
necessities. In addition to its grandiose nature, the East coast is
particularly known for its exceptional and beautiful production of
handicraft that, like the drum dance, is rooted in traditional culture.
