EAST GREENLAND

There are only two towns, a smattering of villages and the world’s largest national park on the 1,600 mile long East Coast of Greenland.  There are both historical and natural reasons for this very sparse settlement.  People have indeed lived in East Greenland for certain periods during the last several thousand years, but the wide belt of field ice has made this area very isolated—both from the rest of Greenland and from the rest of the world! Indeed, the first Europeans to visit came just over a hundred years ago and this separation from others is clearly reflected in the different language and culture of the region compared to the rest of Greenland.  The mythical inspiration derived from its traditional culture is expressed clearly both in the region’s handicrafts and in the figures carved from tusk and bone.  The handicrafts of East Greenland are generally of a very high quality and in great demand.

The far north town of Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund) and the National Park are not often visited by tourists.  In fact, there is no admission to the National Park except for the locals and the town has now only 550 inhabitants and few services.  The main tourist areas in East Greenland are the town of Ammassalik (Tasiilaq) and the nearby village of Kulusuk where the airport is located. Kulusuk is a very popular one-day excursion for tourists visiting Iceland due to its proximity. The tours we offer to East Greenland start and end in Reykjavik, Iceland.

For East Greenland we offer 4-day tours with a combination of Ammassalik and Kulusuk, 3- day tours to Tasiilaq and 2-day tours to Kulusuk. We also offer the one-day excursion to Kulusuk allowing a visit to Greenland without ever checking out of your hotel in Reykjavik.

There are many local excursions to choose from in East Greenland.  Please see the list following the tour.  These excursions can only be ordered and paid for during your stay and operate based on weather and capacity restrictions.  Your “Destination Guides” are on hand to assist you at your hotel with information on the excursions.

Please note there is a two-hour time difference between Iceland and Greenland. The flight time between Reykjavik and Kulusuk is about 2 hours.

Because of the geographical location of East Greenland, the village of Kulusuk and the town of Ammassalik are and have always been relatively isolated in relation to the rest of Greenland. - East Greenland is the destination if you want to experience traditional Greenlandic culture and the original drum dance.

Explore "Tunu" - The backside of the country - which the Greenlanders name the East Coast of Greenland.  Amongst other things, the deserted location has left its mark in the special East Greenland dialect and the original culture has not been affected by the western influence to the same degree as in other parts of Greenland. Actually it is only a little more than 100 years since the first Europeans "discovered" this area!  Old Traditions are still very much a live in East Greenland; During the winter hunting trips with dog sledges (several weeks in duration) are still common and many families choose to live at isolated spots, to improve their hunting of seals, polar bears etc.

Once the summer comes and the ice breaks up, the families are fetched by ship and return to town to sell the winters booty and buy new supplies of cartridges, coffee and other necessities. In addition to its grandiose nature, the East coast is particularly known for its exceptional and beautiful production of handicraft that, like the drum dance, is rooted in traditional culture.
