Norway - Svalbard

Spitsbergen Dogsled Safari

Apr - May

5 Days/4 Nights

A five-day program in Longyearbyen and Svea. On dogsleds and snowmobiles across glaciers, frozen fjords and snow covered plains. Three days are spent in the wilderness where all participants participate in the tasks at hand.

Svalbard is one and a half times the size of Denmark, and there are no roads. This means that snowmobiles are the most common means of transport during the winter. A long ride on a snowmobile through a sparkling white winter wonderland is a memorable experience. The sense of freedom you get when driving across the vast and endless white glacier plateau is truly unforgettable!

Husky RideThe Polar dogs (Huskies) have long traditions in the arctic environment. For centuries people and dogs have shared many battles through snow drifts and winter landscape. They have enjoyed the moonlight as well as the midnight sun. It was as late as the 1960’s before any other means of transport was available in the arctic areas.

We make our way to Svea and Van Mijenfjorden by snowmobile. Here we stay the night in a cabin. The hosts will welcome you and introduce you to the dogs that you will be spending the next few days with. The man and dog relationship is special, it can be both tough and fun at the same time. We will follow a route set by the experienced guides, depending on the weather conditions.

The words freedom and peace are given a totally new meaning during the dog-sledding trip. The landscape opens up and you glide past mountains and glaciers. The only sound that can be heard in this vast remote landscape is the dogs breathing and their paws hitting the snow.

To take part in this excursion you should be fairly fit. On parts of this trip you will be pulled, on your skis, by the sledge so you will need to be a competent skier. As part of the team you will help out with the maintenance of the dogs, setting up camp, preparing food etc.

ADDITIONAL NIGHTS IN LONGYEARBYEN AVAILABLE!!

The tour itinerary
This is a five-day program where three days are spent in the wilderness.  You go to Van Miijenfjord and Svea by snowmobile and from there we make excursions with dog-sleds. Weather and snow conditions will determine the exact route.  As a participant, you trade off driving the dogsleds and traveling on skis pulled by the dog teams.  You should be a solid skier and in general good physical condition.  Everyone will participate in tasks such as feeding the dogs, preparing meals, cleaning up, etc.

Our permanent tour leaders are among the most experienced in the region. They take responsibility for every practical detail of the tour, and ensure that it will be conducted in a safe and suitable way. After a flight across the Arctic Ocean you will be met by our tour leader at Longyearbyen airport.

The next morning, after a good night’s sleep and breakfast, the snowmobiles, plus all necessary clothing and all the other necessary equipment, will be allocated to you. Petrol, oil and provisions have already been organized by the tour leader, along with everything else that could possibly be required on this kind of tour. Before setting out, the tour leader will give you a basic introduction to the driving technique. We start at a moderate speed so that everybody can get used to snowmobile driving. The following two nights will be spent in a cabin (simple facilities) and doing dog-sled excursions.

We return to Longyearbyen and check in to the hotel. After a hot shower and maybe a visit to the sauna we will be ready for an Arctic dinner.

We recommend one person per snowmobile!

We provide snowmobile suits, boots, gloves, hats, goggles, sleeping bags and all the other general equipment. You must have good winter clothing to wear under these clothes.
