SOUTH GREENLAND
For most people visiting South Greenland, the
adventure begins at Narsarsuaq Airport which has flight connections to
Denmark, Iceland and the rest of Greenland. During the summer, South
Greenland lives up to its name of “green land”. Because of the mild
climate, the economic life is very different from the rest of Greenland
with sheep farming and agriculture playing a major part. You can see
isolated sheep farms some of which can only be reached by boat. But South
Greenland is not just known for its fertility, mountains and flowers but
also for its glaciers, icebergs in all shapes and colors and fantastic
views of the Northern Lights from the end of August. Field ice is a
remarkable phenomenon of South Greenland. It is formed in the Arctic Ocean
north of Greenland and carried down and around the southern cape and into
South Greenland’s bays and fjords. The ice brings seals and seal hunting
and fishing are other occupations in the area. Narsarsuaq is the center of
various excursions and Narsaq is the pearl of the area. They are the two
of the three sizeable towns in South Greenland and are separated by a
short boat ride. South Greenland is the most accessible and most traveled
to point in Greenland. All tours start and end in Copenhagen, Denmark and
again there is air service from Iceland in 2005 (see Greenland from
Iceland tours).
There are many local excursions to choose from in
South Greenland. Please see the list following the tour. These excursions
can only be ordered and paid for during your stay and operate based on
weather and capacity restrictions. Your “Destination Guides” are on hand
to assist you at your hotel with information on the excursions.
Please note there is a four-hour time difference
between Denmark and Greenland. The flight time between Copenhagen and
Narsarsuaq is about 4.5 hours.
