ILULISSAT GREENLAND TOUR
Town of Icebergs
5 days
2006
Combined with the Wild Life area of Kangerlussuag
WEST GREENLAND -
Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays/Fridays Jun –
Sep
About half of Greenland’s 55,000 inhabitants
live in the large towns along the west coast. Enormous fjord systems and
skerries are typical of the whole region with the Gulf Stream keeping the
seas from freezing over allowing opportunities for boat trips with a good
chance of seeing seals and whales. Kangerlussuaq (Sondre Stromfjord) is the
main airport of the region having regularly scheduled service from Denmark
as well as connections to other areas in West Greenland. It is the best
area to see the Arctic wild life as well as the Greenland Ice Cap. It is
also a main embarkation and disembarkation point for passengers traveling on
Greenland’s “Coastal Steamer”. There is quite a fascination in the mixture
of the old and new that now has become part of Greenland’s landscape. A
short air flight further north of the Arctic Circle from Kangerlussuaq is
the town of Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) known for its gigantic icebergs, fast
moving glaciers and its location on Disko Bay. This area is also very
historic with isolated settlements dating from 1734 which can still be
visited today. There are not many animals in this area but bird and fish
abound. Mainly because of the unpredictability of the weather and the short
span of light days, the touring season to West Greenland is shorter than
that of other parts of Greenland. These tours only start and end in
Copenhagen, Denmark.
There are many local excursions to choose
from in West Greenland. Please see the list following the tour. These
excursions can only be ordered and paid for during your stay and operate
based on weather and capacity restrictions. Your “Destination Guides” are
on hand to assist you at your hotel with information on the excursions.
Please note there is a four-hour time
difference between Denmark and Greenland. The flight time between Copenhagen
and Kangerlussuaq is about 5 hours.

Greenland combined with Kangerlussuaq. Experience

Kangerlussuaq
has proved not only to be an airport or a gateway into Greenland. The
airport does not look much when arriving from Copenhagen, but the area
actually has much to offer:
Greenland Wild Life: Kangerlussuaq has become the best area in Greenland
to spot Arctic wild life - just a few minutes away from the hotel you very
often can see Arctic foxes, reindeer and musk oxen!
The Inland Ice Cap: No other destination in Greenland offers this easy
access to the Ice Cap as Kangerlussuaq - we drive by car directly to the
Greenland Ice Cap.
Fantastic weather: The location approx.180 km inland from the coast
makes Kangerlusuaq one of the most weather stabile tourist destinations in
Greenland with lots of sunshine!
Ilulissat - where a 3 day stay means plenty of time to get familiar with
a modern Greenland town north of the Polar Circle and experience the
spectacular Disko Bay:
Calving Glaciers & Gigantic Icebergs: Gigantic Icebergs are situated in
the fjord right outside the town and are experienced at close range on our
Midnight Cruises and during full day excursions where we cruise close to the
impressive glacier of Eqi.
Isolated Settlements: On other
excursions we sail to small and remote settlements, where "the old world"
and the Greenlandic hunters are still to be experienced.
Home Visit: Get in contact with the local population and learn more
about their everyday life.
Helicopter Excursions: Over the Icefjord & its gigantic icebergs to the
Ilulissat Glacier or to the Isle of Disko for a dogsled ride.
Fine hotels: Hotel Kangerlussuaq is a modern tourist hotel where
all rooms we use are renovated and are offering modern interior, minibar,
satellite TV and private facilities.
In
Ilulissat we offer the Hotel Arctic: Whenever available, we use
Hotel Arctic located at the outskirts of the town with the most beautiful
view towards the fjord and the gigantic Icebergs - at Hotel Arctic we
furthermore are able to offer superior rooms, all with a guaranteed fjord
view!
Destination Guides: We offer Destination Guides in Ilulissat as well as
in Kangerlussuaq.
