GREENLAND TOUR

FROM SOUTH TO NORTH

11 days

Narsaq, Narsarsuaq & Ilulissat, the town of the Icebergs
Combined with Nuuk & Kangerlussaq

Monday Departures July thru August
2006

WEST GREENLAND

About half of Greenland’s 55,000 inhabitants live in the large towns along the west coast. Enormous fjord systems and skerries are typical of the whole region with the Gulf Stream keeping the seas from freezing over allowing opportunities for boat trips with a good chance of seeing seals and whales. Kangerlussuaq (Sondre Stromfjord) is the main airport of the region having regularly scheduled service from Denmark as well as connections to other areas in West Greenland. It is the best area to see the Arctic wild life as well as the Greenland Ice Cap. It is also a main embarkation and disembarkation point for passengers traveling on Greenland’s “Coastal Steamer”. There is quite a fascination in the mixture of the old and new that now has become part of Greenland’s landscape. A short air flight further north of the Arctic Circle from Kangerlussuaq is the town of Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) known for its gigantic icebergs, fast moving glaciers and its location on Disko Bay. This area is also very historic with isolated settlements dating from 1734 which can still be visited today. There are not many animals in this area but bird and fish abound. Mainly because of the unpredictability of the weather and the short span of light days, the touring season to West Greenland is shorter than that of other parts of Greenland. All tours only start and end in Copenhagen, Denmark.

There are many local excursions to choose from in West Greenland. Please see the list following the tour. These excursions can only be ordered and paid for during your stay and operate based on weather and capacity restrictions. Your “Destination Guides” are on hand to assist you at your hotel with information on the excursions.

Please note there is a four-hour time difference between Denmark and Greenland. The flight time between Copenhagen and Narsarsuaq is about 5 hours.

This is the Grand tour of Greenland:
- Beautiful and fertile South Greenland: Narsarsuaq & Narsaq
- the Capital of Nuuk
- the Town of the Icebergs, Ilulissat
- the Wild Life Area around Kangerlussuaq

Guaranteed departures from Copenhagen/2006

Every Monday: July - August

-Ilulissat - the Town of the Icebergs: We offer daily optional excursions which means good possibilities to get familiar with a modern Greenland town north of the Polar Circle:

- Gigantic Icebergs: Gigantic Icebergs are situated in the fjord right outside the town and experienced at close range on our Sermermiut excursion as well as on our Midnight Cruises.

- Isolated Settlements: On boat excursions we sail to exotic and isolated tiny settlements, where "the old world" and the everyday life of the Greenlandic hunters are still to be experienced.

- Home Visit: Get in contact with the local population and learn more about their everyday life while enjoying the traditional "Coffee-Mik" at a private house.

- Helicopter Sightseeing: While in Ilulissat we will also try to organize a helicopter sightseeing to the Ilulissat Glacier. Please note that this excursion is depending upon availability of helicopter.

South Greenland: Historic sites from the Viking Age, the Inland Ice Cap, fertile mountains with sheep farms, deep blue fiords with multi-coloured icebergs, calving glaciers - and everything within short range from our hotel.

The Greenland Capital, Nuuk: A modern town in the Arctic, the centre of Greenland administration and the site of the famous Greenland National Museum.

Ilulissat: Town of the Icebergs and the most modern town in the Disko Bay area – still man is outnumbered by the huskies and traces of 4000 years old inuit settlements are still are to be found. Furthermore small and isolated settlements where the local population still are depending upon hunting and fishing are to be found close to the town - not to forget the Ilulissat Ice fiord and its gigantic icebergs.

Kangerlussuaq: The wildlife area where a short stopover makes it possible to join an arctic safari and experience musk oxen & reindeer.

Accommodation: In Ilulissat whenever possible, we offer the Hotel Arctic located at the outskirts of the town with the most beautiful view towards the fjord and the gigantic Icebergs - at Hotel Arctic we furthermore are able to offer superior rooms, all brand new and with a guaranteed fjord view!
